Midnight Banshee

Midnight Banshee was originally introduced as a rare card in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shadowmoor, serving as a powerful representative of the set's focus on hybrid mana and dark, folkloric aesthetics. The Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block was designed to shift between the whimsical, high-fantasy tone of Lorwyn and the twisted, twilight gothic landscape of Shadowmoor, with the Banshee embodying the latter's emphasis on persistent decay through its unique -1/-1 counter mechanic.

The card’s striking illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is renowned for its ethereal, painterly style and ability to capture the melancholy of the Shadowmoor plane. Hamm sought to depict the Banshee as a ghostly, imposing figure that physically bleeds shadow onto the battlefield, an artistic choice that was widely praised by players for its atmospheric coherence with the card’s mechanical impact and its enduring popularity in black-aligned Commander decks.
