Where it came from
Midnight Clock was originally introduced in the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, drawing heavy inspiration from classic fairy tales and the aesthetic of high-fantasy clockwork. The card serves as a mana-producing artifact that doubles as a ticking countdown mechanism, which resets the hand of every player once it reaches its twelfth counter. It was designed to provide a strategic pivot point in longer games, forcing players to cycle their resources and altering the momentum of the board state.
This specific printing comes from the Modern Horizons 3 Commander set, released in 2024. As part of a direct-to-Commander release, the card reflects the set's focus on powerful, high-synergy tools intended to bolster existing deck archetypes. The illustration maintains the original artistic vision of a magical, ominous timepiece, emphasizing the intersection of mechanical precision and arcane power that characterizes the card's function within the game.
