What it does
Remove any number of counters from among permanents on the battlefield. You draw cards and lose life equal to the number of counters removed this way.
Ajani's heart went out to those changed by the aurora's tides. Having selfhood ripped away was still a painfully familiar feeling.

Where it came from
Eventide's Shadow was released as part of the Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander set, a thematic expansion that reimagined the folklore-inspired mechanics of the original Lorwyn block. The card reflects the set's central conceit, which explored the darker, night-cycle counterpart to the vibrant, diurnal plane featured in earlier expansions. It was designed to provide utility within black-aligned decks, emphasizing the resource-draining and shadow-themed aesthetics that defined the expansion's mechanical identity.
The illustrative direction for the card focused on the moody, high-contrast gothic fantasy style prevalent in the Eclipsed series. Artists tasked with these designs aimed to bridge the gap between classic fairy-tale imagery and the more sinister, twilight-infused tone of the lore. Upon release, the card was received by players as a niche but evocative inclusion, prized primarily for its atmospheric art and its role in bolstering tribal synergies within the specific commander format of the time.
