Provenance

Where it came from

Midnight Reaper was released as part of the Guilds of Ravnica set in 2018, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the Golgari Swarm guild. Within the lore of Magic: The Gathering, the card represents a harvester of souls within the decay-focused Golgari faction of the Ravnica plane, emphasizing the guild's core mechanic of gaining advantages through the death of one's own creatures.

The promotional version, bearing the collector number 77p, features unique alternative art by Lucas Graciano. This rendition captures the ominous, necrotic aesthetic typical of the Golgari, utilizing dark, organic textures that reflect the artist's focus on atmosphere and fantasy grimness. The card became a staple in black-aligned midrange decks of the era for its consistent ability to provide card advantage while maintaining board presence.
