Midnight Reaper

Midnight Reaper was originally released as a rare card in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering set Guilds of Ravnica, designed to represent the grim, efficient nature of the Golgari Swarm on the plane of Ravnica. The card quickly became a staple in black-aligned midrange and aristocrat-style decks due to its ability to reward players for the death of their own creatures, serving as a reliable engine for card advantage.

This specific iteration arrived as part of a 2022 Secret Lair drop titled Showcase: Midnight Hunt. The artwork was provided by illustrator Bastien Lecouffe-Deharme, who utilized a stark, high-contrast aesthetic to emphasize the reaper's ethereal and menacing presence. The design choices for this series were intended to lean into a more illustrative, moody art style that contrasted with the more traditional digital renderings typically found in standard booster sets, receiving praise from collectors who favor stylized, artist-driven interpretations of established characters.
