Where it came from
Mind Rake was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's history as the first product designed specifically for the Modern format, allowing Wizards of the Coast to introduce cards directly into the format without them passing through a Standard-legal set. The card functions as a discard spell, forcing each player to discard two cards, a mechanic that evokes classic, high-impact black-aligned disruption effects.
The card features an evocative illustration by artist Titus Lunter, who was tasked with visualizing the feeling of a forced, psychic depletion. Lunter’s work on the piece focuses on dark, atmospheric tones that align with the card's mechanical identity. Upon release, Mind Rake was recognized by players as a strategic tool for decks utilizing graveyard synergies or resource-denial tactics, securing its place as a functional piece within the broader suite of black-mana disruptive spells available in the Modern pool.
