Mind Over Matter

Mind Over Matter was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set served as the conclusion to the Rath Cycle, a major storyline that introduced complex mechanics involving the manipulation of resources and cards in play. The card was designed to push the boundaries of how players interact with their hand, creating powerful synergy loops that became central to competitive deck-building strategies of the late nineties.

The artwork was provided by the celebrated fantasy illustrator Keith Parkinson, known for his work on the Dungeons & Dragons line. Parkinson utilized a painterly, atmospheric style to capture the concept of psychic dominance, depicting a figure wielding overwhelming mental influence. While the illustration was praised for its technical execution, the card itself quickly gained notoriety within the community for its extreme power level, eventually leading to its restriction or banishment in various tournament formats due to its tendency to destabilize game balance.
