Where it came from
Mind Over Matter was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to round out the Rath cycle, introducing mechanics that emphasized complex board states and resource management. The card itself became a centerpiece of high-level play due to its ability to discard cards to untap permanents, which facilitated powerful combo-driven archetypes in the game's competitive environment.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators from the early years of the game. Rush utilized his signature style to depict the psychic tension described in the card's flavor text, aiming to visualize the theme of mental fortitude exerting physical control. Upon its release, it was recognized for its strategic depth, eventually leading to its restriction in various competitive formats as players discovered its capacity to overwhelm opponents through efficient card manipulation.
