Provenance

Where it came from

Mind Rot first appeared in the Urza's Legacy expansion in 1999, designed as a staple black-aligned discard spell for Magic: The Gathering. By the time it was included in the Tenth Edition base set in 2007, it had become a foundational component of the game's core gameplay experience, designed to force opponents to manage their resources under pressure.

The Tenth Edition artwork for Mind Rot was illustrated by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more grotesque or overtly demonic imagery of earlier versions to provide a cleaner, more visceral representation of psychological strain. This iteration was intended to integrate seamlessly into the modern frame design of the mid-2000s and was widely received as a functional, illustrative example of black mana's disruptive identity.
