Mind Rot

Mind Rot is a staple discard spell in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, originating in the Alpha set and appearing across many core sets, including the 2013 edition. The card was designed to serve as a fundamental tool for black-aligned decks, embodying the color's philosophy of psychological attrition and resource denial by forcing an opponent to discard two cards at random. By the time of the Magic 2013 release, the card had become a reliable inclusion in limited play environments, valued for its ability to strip an opponent of their late-game options.

The artwork for the Magic 2013 printing was illustrated by the artist Dave Kendall. Kendall’s interpretation aimed to capture the visceral, unnerving nature of a fractured psyche through dark, atmospheric brushwork consistent with the grim aesthetics of black mana spells. While the mechanical function of Mind Rot has remained static for decades, this specific iteration is noted by players for its streamlined, functional design and its role in maintaining a consistent power level within the set's draft ecosystem.
