Where it came from
Misthollow Griffin was introduced in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored. The card was designed as part of the set's broader exploration of the Helvault, a mystical prison designed to contain the forces of darkness in the world of Innistrad. The creature's unique ability, which allows it to be cast from exile, was a mechanical experiment intended to turn the negative game state of exile into a strategic advantage, subverting established rules of resource management.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Svetlin Velinov, who chose a dynamic, ethereal aesthetic to reflect the creature’s ghostly, recurring nature. While not a dominant force in standard tournament play at the time of its release, the design gained lasting notoriety among niche strategy communities for its synergy with cards that manipulate exile zones. Its visual design remains a classic example of the gothic, high-fantasy tone that defined the Avacyn Restored expansion.
