Terrifying Presence

Terrifying Presence was released in May 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the expansion's focus on the return of the archangel Avacyn and the desperate struggle of the plane's inhabitants against burgeoning supernatural threats. As a common instant, it was designed to provide a tactical combat trick for green decks, emphasizing the visceral, overwhelming nature of nature's wrath against encroaching darkness.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the sudden, primal fear invoked by a forest predator or an ancient guardian manifesting within the woods. Jones utilized high-contrast lighting and dynamic perspective to emphasize the imposing scale of the creature depicted, effectively conveying the card’s mechanical intent to intimidate and disrupt opposing forces during the combat phase. Upon release, the illustration was noted by players for its atmospheric quality, fitting seamlessly into the grim aesthetic of the set.
