Provenance

Where it came from

Mistmeadow Witch was originally introduced in the Shadowmoor expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2008. The card reflects the set's focus on the hybrid mana mechanic and the eerie, fairytale-inspired aesthetic of the plane of Shadowmoor, a world perpetually locked in a state of twilight. Mechanically, the card was designed to capitalize on the 'blink' effect, allowing players to exile and return creatures to the battlefield to trigger enter-the-battlefield abilities or protect key pieces from removal.

The Modern Masters 2017 version features the original illustration by Warren Mahy, whose work frequently captures the surreal and grotesque fantasy elements characteristic of the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block. As part of the Modern Masters 2017 set, the card was included to provide players with tools for blink-based archetypes within the limited environment and to increase the availability of utility creatures for the Modern format. The reprint maintained the card's role as a staple for tactical play, praised for its versatility despite its relatively high mana cost for repeated activation.
