What it does

Where it came from
Séance was originally introduced in the Dark Ascension expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2012, designed to capture a gothic horror aesthetic that defined the set's setting, Innistrad. The card functions as a rare enchantment that allows players to return creature cards from their graveyard to the battlefield temporarily, reflecting the set's preoccupation with necromancy, ghosts, and the boundary between life and death.
The 2017 Modern Masters printing, which features artwork by Nils Hamm, was curated to provide players with access to staple cards from the game's competitive formats. Hamm's illustration leans into the ethereal and unsettling nature of the card's mechanics, utilizing a muted palette and ghostly figures to ground the item within the dark fantasy narrative that has made the card a distinct piece of visual and functional design in the Modern format.
