Moan of the Unhallowed

Moan of the Unhallowed was first printed in the 2011 set Innistrad, designed to evoke the gothic horror themes of the plane. It was later reprinted in the 2016 Duel Decks: Blessed vs. Cursed, a product designed to showcase the thematic conflict between the human-aligned forces of Avacyn and the monstrous inhabitants of the dark woods. The card was illustrated by Nils Hamm, who utilized his signature painterly and atmospheric style to capture the unsettling nature of a graveyard ritual.

Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the graveyard-centric mechanics of the Innistrad block, specifically the flashback keyword. By allowing players to cast the spell twice, it creates a sense of encroaching dread and resource recursion.
