Where it came from
Monologue Tax was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander set. It was designed as a white-aligned 'taxing' effect, a strategic pillar of the color's identity in the Commander format that aims to punish opponents for playing multiple spells in a single turn. By rewarding the controller with Treasure tokens, the card provides resource parity in a multiplayer environment where white decks often struggle to keep pace with the card draw and ramp capabilities of other colors.
The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator known for her work on numerous Magic: The Gathering sets. Her design for this piece leans into the Gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane, visually representing the bureaucratic and oppressive nature of the card's namesake. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a staple inclusion for white Commander decks, appreciated for its ability to generate consistent value over the course of a long game.
