Where it came from
Monologue Tax was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, specifically within the Silverquill Statement deck. Designed for the multi-player Commander format, the card was created to provide white decks with a tool for card draw, addressing long-standing criticisms regarding the color's lack of consistent card advantage compared to others in the game.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who leaned into the opulent, scholarly aesthetic of the Silverquill College from the Strixhaven: School of Mages plane. The design emphasizes a bureaucratic and taxing theme, visually representing the flavor of extracting resources from opponents, and was received by players as a functional, if situational, effort to balance the game's color pie.
