Where it came from
The Moonsilver Spear was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored set for Magic: The Gathering. Within the narrative of the Innistrad block, the spear is a legendary artifact forged from silver blessed by the archangel Avacyn herself, specifically designed to combat the overwhelming supernatural threats plaguing the plane. Its inclusion in the set reinforced the gothic horror theme of the expansion, offering players a functional tool that mirrored the desperate defense of humanity against encroaching darkness.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a stark, high-contrast style to emphasize the weapon's divine origin and ethereal glow. By depicting the spear as a luminous, holy armament against the backdrop of a dark, brooding landscape, Staples captured the thematic tension between light and shadow that defined the set. It was received by players as a flavorful, if situational, equipment card, frequently highlighted for its aesthetic contribution to the angelic imagery prevalent throughout Avacyn Restored.
