Where it came from
Terminus was released in 2012 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored. The card was designed as a powerful board wipe specifically tailored for the 'miracle' mechanic, which allowed players to cast the spell for a significantly reduced mana cost if it was the first card drawn during their turn. Mechanically, it was intended to serve as a high-impact, thematic centerpiece that represented the sudden, cataclysmic reset of the plane of Innistrad following the return of the archangel Avacyn.
The atmospheric artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game known for his painterly and expressive style. Briclot focused on capturing the scale and overwhelming nature of the spell, depicting a massive, divine intervention that literally clears the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and ability to bypass indestructible creatures, cementing its legacy as a staple in various constructed formats, most notably Legacy and Commander.
