Where it came from
The Moratorium Stone was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion, the second set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card serves as a thematic artifact reflecting the legalistic and bureaucratic nature of the Orzhov Syndicate, one of the primary factions within the Ravnica setting. It functions as a disruptive tool meant to stall the flow of graveyard-based strategies, consistent with the set's focus on complex, guild-specific mechanics.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the oppressive and solemn atmosphere of the Orzhov’s influence on the city. The illustration depicts a stark, monolithic structure embedded with religious and legal iconography, emphasizing the cold finality of the syndicate's rule. Upon its release, the card was viewed by players as a niche sideboard option, appreciated more for its atmospheric contribution to the set’s lore than for competitive tournament dominance.
