Gruul Turf was first released in the 2006 Guildpact expansion, a set dedicated to the Ravnica block's lore of the guilds that control the city-plane. This card belongs to a cycle of 'bounce lands'—utility lands that enter the battlefield tapped and require the player to return a land to their hand, providing both a deck-thinning effect and color flexibility. It was designed to represent the Gruul Clans, a group defined by their rejection of urban civilization and their desire to reclaim the wild, overgrown ruins of Ravnica.

The card's artwork, illustrated by Justin Sweet, captures the chaotic, encroaching nature of the Gruul aesthetic.
