Where it came from
Mortarion, Daemon Primarch was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. This collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop introduced iconic characters and factions from the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the Magic multiverse, specifically designed to bridge the aesthetic gap between high-fantasy spellcasting and the grimdark science fiction of the 41st millennium.
The card features the art of Greg Staples, who utilized his long-standing relationship with Games Workshop to capture the imposing, pestilence-ridden stature of the Primarch of the Death Guard. The design emphasizes Mortarion’s role as an engine of attrition, mirroring his lore-heavy reputation for resilience and decay. It was received as a centerpiece card for players interested in synergistic, life-drain mechanics and remains a sought-after staple for collectors of both the Magic and Warhammer brands.
