Provenance

Where it came from

Mortis Dogs was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set, the final chapter of the Scars of Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set depicts the total conquest of the plane of Mirrodin by the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors who seek to refine and assimilate all life forms they encounter. The card represents the grotesque biological modification of native fauna into the service of the machine orthodoxy.

The artwork was created by Chippy, a veteran fantasy illustrator known for his distinctively atmospheric and often unsettling style. In his design for Mortis Dogs, he aimed to convey the dissonance of a creature caught between its original canine anatomy and the invasive, metallic augmentations required by Phyrexian doctrine. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, low-cost defensive option for players exploring black-aligned 'aristocrats' strategies, which utilize the death of creatures to generate value.
