Where it came from
Released in May 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion, this Island card represents the final chapter of the Scars of Mirrodin block. The set depicts the complete subversion of the metallic plane of Mirrodin by the corruptive influence of Phyrexia. Mechanically and thematically, these lands were designed to reflect the twisted, industrial, and biomechanical landscape that replaced the once-pristine natural world of the plane.
The artwork for this specific card was crafted by artist Jung Park, who was commissioned to illustrate the bleak, transformed geography of the Phyrexianized plane. His approach emphasizes the harsh, jagged aesthetics and alien geometry that define New Phyrexia's environment. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric commitment to the set's dark narrative, effectively communicating the total environmental collapse caused by the Phyrexians.
