Where it came from
Mourning Patrol // Morning Apparition is a double-faced card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The set marked a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on the encroaching darkness and the struggle for survival. The card was designed to embody the set's transformative mechanics, representing the duality of the spirits that haunt the plane as they shift between their mourning state and their spectral manifestation.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her evocative character portrayals. Her design for this creature reflects the melancholy and ethereal aesthetic central to the Innistrad visual identity. Upon release, the card was integrated into the Limited and Standard environments as a versatile utility creature, noted by players for its ability to provide recurring value through its keyword abilities.
