Mourning Thrull

Mourning Thrull was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a member of the Orzhov Syndicate—the game's black and white-aligned guild—the card embodies the faction's thematic obsession with afterlife, debt, and clerical bureaucracy. Its design intent centered on the 'haunt' keyword mechanic, which allowed creatures to persist as ethereal spirits attached to other cards after they died, emphasizing the Orzhov philosophy that death is merely a transition into continued servitude.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by illustrator Rebecca Guay, whose distinctive, painterly style brought a melancholic, ethereal aesthetic to the creature.
