Where it came from
Mourning Thrull was introduced in the 2006 Guildpact expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Part of the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild defined by its ecclesiastical structure and obsession with debt and death, the card was designed to highlight the 'haunt' mechanic, which allowed creatures to persist in the game as ghosts after their death. This set expanded the game's lore by focusing on the complex political interactions within the city-plane of Ravnica.
The artwork was commissioned from Italian illustrator Dany Orizio, known for his atmospheric and moody fantasy style.
