Provenance

Where it came from

Muck Drubb was originally released in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Planar Chaos. The card was designed as a thematic homage to the graveyard-based mechanics of the game’s early history, specifically referencing the design philosophy of older sets like Odyssey. It reflects the set's broader goal of exploring a 'what-if' timeline where the color pie was shifted, allowing for unusual mechanical interactions within the black color identity.

The art was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast and produced by illustrator Dave Kendall. His distinct, gritty aesthetic was selected to evoke the grotesque nature of the creature, a common staple of his work within the Magic art stable at the time. When the card was reprinted in the 2021 Time Spiral Remastered set, it was included as part of the curated list intended to capture the nostalgia and unique mechanical identity of the original Time Spiral block for modern players.
