Where it came from
Mtenda Griffin was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage served as the first set designed to function as a standalone play experience, introducing new mechanics like phasing and flanking. The set drew significant inspiration from African, Middle Eastern, and Asian folklore, departing from the high-fantasy tropes that defined earlier releases.
The card was illustrated by Susan Van Camp, a long-time contributor to the game known for her whimsical and detailed artistic style. Her work on this card depicts the titular character in a manner consistent with the set's thematic commitment to global mythologies. While the card is often cited by collectors for its niche mechanical utility within the set's limited environment, it remains a notable example of the artistic diversity pursued by the design team during the mid-nineties period.
