Where it came from
Multiversal Recruitment was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' collaboration with Marvel, specifically within the Marvel Super Heroes Commander set. The card was designed to mechanically represent the expansive nature of the Marvel Multiverse, allowing players to pull iconic characters from disparate timelines into a single unified board state, reflecting the narrative theme of crossover events inherent to comic book history.
The aesthetic direction of the card was guided by Wizards of the Coast's internal art team, who aimed to blend the signature visual language of contemporary Magic: The Gathering with the traditional, high-action illustrative style associated with modern Marvel comics. It was received by the player base as a centerpiece card for the deck, praised for its thematic alignment with the concept of assembling a team of heroes rather than merely playing a single unit.
