Where it came from
Munda, Ambush Leader was released as part of the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The character serves as a Kor ally who leads scouting parties on the world of Zendikar, a plane defined by its treacherous terrain and the presence of the reality-warping Eldrazi titans. As a rare creature card, it was designed to highlight the 'Ally' mechanic, which encourages players to build decks around synergy and cooperative creature abilities.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his expressive use of light and color. Voss aimed to capture Munda's tactical role as a scout, depicting him mid-action with a focus on his distinct Kor aesthetic, characterized by flowing garments and the iconic lithomancy-related gear synonymous with his race. Upon its debut, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set’s lore, appealing particularly to players interested in tribal synergies and the broader narrative of the Zendikar conflict.
