Murderous Rider was originally introduced in the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, designed as a versatile card that combines a creature with a targeted removal spell. The mechanic, known as Adventure, was created to represent the flavor of the plane of Eldraine, a world heavily inspired by European fairy tales and high-fantasy lore. By allowing players to cast the 'Swift End' spell first and later play the creature itself, the design team aimed to provide players with a card that maintains utility throughout the different phases of a game.

This specific printing comes from the March of the Machine Commander series, released in 2023. As part of a supplemental product set, this version retains the original function of the card while updating its availability for Commander players. The illustration captures the grim, knightly aesthetic of the card, focusing on the dark thematic elements of the creature, which remains a staple in black-aligned decks for its ability to manage threats efficiently on the battlefield.
