Where it came from
My Genius Knows No Bounds was released in 2010 as part of the Archenemy set for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a unique variant of the game where one player acts as an 'archenemy' against a team of others, utilizing a deck of powerful, oversized scheme cards to balance the asymmetrical gameplay. The design reflects the trope of the megalomaniacal mastermind, aiming to provide the archenemy with an overwhelming narrative advantage during their turn.
The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, a long-time contributor to the game known for his distinctively dark and atmospheric fantasy aesthetic. Kendall’s work on this piece emphasizes the theme of intellectual arrogance and unchecked ambition, fitting the scheme's ability to draw cards and force opponents to discard. Upon release, the scheme was well-received by players for its thematic resonance, successfully capturing the flavor of a villainous monologue translated into game mechanics.
