Where it came from
Myojin of Cryptic Dreams was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander. This card belongs to a cycle of legendary spirits that revisit the Myojin theme originally established in the 2004 Champions of Kamigawa set. The design concept bridges the gap between the original block’s ethereal, Shinto-inspired aesthetic and the modernized, cyberpunk-inflected tone of the return to Kamigawa.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's distinct fusion of traditional motifs and futuristic technology to depict the spirit. Within the game's mechanics, the Myojin creatures are known for entering the battlefield with an indestructible counter, which players remove to trigger powerful, singular abilities. This specific iteration was well-received by commander players for its high-impact, albeit high-cost, board control potential.
