Where it came from
Myrkul, Lord of Bones was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing directly from Dungeons & Dragons lore, the card depicts the deity of death from the Dead Three, who is central to the history of the Forgotten Realms setting. The card was designed to mechanically represent Myrkul's mastery over the deceased by turning creatures that perish into indestructible enchantments, emphasizing his role as a keeper of souls.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who crafted a haunting, ethereal depiction of the skeletal deity draped in traditional necromantic regalia. The design aims to capture a sense of ancient, decaying majesty, aligning with the dark aesthetic of the God of the Dead. Upon its release, the card gained significant interest within the Commander format for its unique ability to preserve the board presence of fallen creatures, cementing its status as a cornerstone for graveyard-focused deck strategies.
