Where it came from
Myrkul, Lord of Bones was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing from the deep lore of the Forgotten Realms, the card represents the deity of death and the former mortal who ascended to power in the Dungeons & Dragons mythos. Its design serves to mechanically reflect Myrkul’s portfolio, allowing players to transform their dying creatures into indestructible enchantment tokens, effectively ensuring that the Lord of Bones commands his followers even after their physical demise.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the grim, skeletal aesthetic associated with the character. The design team focused on creating a high-impact commander that rewards graveyard-centric playstyles, positioning it as a centerpiece for decks built around attrition and board state permanence. Within the broader context of the set, the card was received as a flavorful and mechanically distinct addition that bridged the gap between traditional Magic gameplay and the iconic villainy of Dungeons & Dragons.
