Provenance

Where it came from

Natural Spring was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a foundational common card representing basic life-gain mechanics. By the time it appeared in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, the game had shifted significantly, and the card served as a quintessential example of the 'vanilla' sorcery effects that defined the early era of the game's development.

The Ninth Edition printing featured updated art by Edward P. Beard Jr., who was tasked with updating the aesthetic of long-standing core set cards to match the higher production standards of the mid-2000s. While functional, the card is often discussed by players as a relic of the game's initial design philosophy, where direct life-gain spells were more prevalent in common card slots than they are in modern iterations of the game.
