Neck Tangle

Neck Tangle was released as part of the 2013 Magic: The Gathering product known as Face the Hydra, which was a special challenge deck designed to simulate a solo or cooperative boss battle. This set represented a departure from traditional competitive play, inviting players to confront a single, automated opponent that followed a specific algorithmic ruleset. The card was crafted to embody the thematic struggle of battling a multi-headed mythological beast, emphasizing the mechanic of the creature growing increasingly difficult to defeat as the game progressed.

The art and design for the set were managed by the Wizards of the Coast internal creative team, focusing on a visceral, predatory aesthetic that leaned into Greek mythology tropes.
