Necrogen Communion // Necrogen Communion

Necrogen Communion was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Art Series, a subset of collectible cards featuring high-quality, frame-less illustrations from the core set. This card highlights the gruesome aesthetic of the Phyrexian faction, specifically focusing on the atmospheric horror and biomechanical corruption that defines the plane of New Phyrexia. The series was designed to appeal to collectors who prioritize the visual storytelling of Magic: The Gathering over gameplay mechanics, as these cards are printed without the standard border, text boxes, or mana costs of traditional gameplay cards.

The artwork for this piece was crafted by the illustrator Games Workshop and Wizards of the Coast veteran, bringing a visceral intensity to the card. The design intent was to capture the ritualistic and transformative nature of the Phyrexians as they forcibly assimilate other beings into their machine orthodoxy. Upon release, these art cards were well-received by the collector community for their ability to showcase the intricate, often grotesque details that are frequently obscured by the frame and text on standard play cards, serving as a dedicated showcase for the game's expansive visual lore.
