Provenance

Where it came from

The Necron Overlord card was released in 2020 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of the Commander format.

The art features a high-ranking Necron leader, designed to evoke the cold, mechanical menace of the tabletop miniatures. Illustrators for the set aimed to bridge the two aesthetics, utilizing the distinct, metallic visual language of the Necron faction to ensure the card felt authentic to fans of the source material while remaining legible within the gameplay constraints of Magic: The Gathering.
