Where it came from
Necropanther was released in 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. The set was designed around a theme of monstrous creatures and mutation, drawing inspiration from kaiju cinema and high-fantasy beast encounters. As a rare card, it introduced a unique utility mechanic that allowed players to bring smaller creature cards back from the graveyard, reinforcing the set's cycle-of-life aesthetic.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to emphasize the creature's supernatural nature. Voss is known for his expressive, painterly style, and here he focuses on the feline grace of the panther blended with necrotic, undead elements. Upon release, it was received as a niche but effective tool for deck archetypes focused on graveyard recursion, particularly within the Orzhov color combination.
