Where it came from
Necropolis Regent was originally introduced in the Return to Ravnica expansion in 2012, designed by Greg Staples. The card features a powerful vampire lord aesthetic, aligning with the gothic, city-centric lore of the Dimir and Orzhov factions, and was later included in the 2017 Explorers of Ixalan set as part of a curated collection of cards intended to function within the game's unique multiplayer board-game format.
The card’s mechanics center on the 'flying' keyword and a scaling power-boosting ability that triggers upon combat damage, encouraging aggressive playstyles. During its release, it was noted by players for its high mana cost, which balanced its potentially game-ending ability. It remains a staple in casual Commander formats, valued for its ability to quickly snowball a creature's stats in multiplayer environments.
