Needle Storm

Needle Storm was released in 2005 as part of the Ninth Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering. This set served as the successor to Eighth Edition and was notable for its shift in card frame design, which aimed to modernize the game's aesthetic while maintaining the familiarity of long-standing gameplay mechanics. The card was originally introduced in the Invasion expansion, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the multi-colored mechanical conflicts of the Dominarian plane.

The artwork for this iteration was created by Val Mayerik, an illustrator with a long history in comic books and fantasy art. Mayerik’s depiction captures the chaotic, rain-like descent of magical projectiles, a visual interpretation of the card's effect which deals damage to all flying creatures. The design of the card relies on the established rules of sorcery spells, providing players with a strategic board-wipe utility that specifically counters aerial threats, a hallmark of the green color identity's defensive capabilities.
