Needle Storm

Needle Storm was released in 1997 as part of the Portal expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed specifically as an introductory product for new players, featuring simplified rules and a distinct lack of complex keywords or mechanics to ensure a low barrier to entry. The design team, led by Richard Garfield, aimed to create a self-contained experience that could be played right out of the box without the need for extensive deck-building knowledge.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Val Mayerik, a prolific comic book artist known for his work on characters like Howard the Duck. Mayerik utilized a bold, dramatic style that captured the chaotic nature of the spell, which functions as a direct damage effect intended to clear the board of smaller creatures. Upon release, the set received mixed reviews from veteran players who found the gameplay too simplistic, but it successfully met its goal of teaching fundamental mechanics to a new generation of hobbyists.
