Where it came from
Nekusar, the Mindrazer was originally introduced in the 2013 Commander set as a Grixis-aligned creature designed to punish opponents for drawing cards. The character occupies a significant place in Magic: The Gathering lore as a fallen lich king of Grixis, tasked by Nicol Bolas with harvesting the souls of the dead. This specific Secret Lair version, featuring alternate artwork by Mark Poole, was released as part of a curated collection celebrating iconic figures within the Commander format.
The design of this iteration draws heavily on the artist's distinctive style, which has been a staple of the game since its early Alpha days. By revisiting a popular commander through the lens of a veteran illustrator, Wizards of the Coast sought to provide players with a premium, visually striking option for their decks. The card was met with appreciation from the community, largely due to the nostalgic aesthetic shift that contrasts with the original, more aggressive character illustration.
