Provenance

Where it came from

Nemesis Mask was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this artifact card was designed to reflect the metallic, industrial themes of the Mirrodin block, where all inhabitants and objects are composed of living metal. The card’s ability, which forces all creatures able to block the equipped creature to do so, was created to provide players with a strategic tool for manipulating combat encounters on the battlefield.

The card’s striking illustration was executed by artist Darrell Riche, whose work was a staple of the era. Riche opted for a visceral, intimidating aesthetic that captures the cold, predatory nature of the Mirrodin plane. Upon its debut, the card was received as a niche but effective utility artifact, often utilized in limited and casual formats where forcing blocking assignments could decisively swing the board state in the player’s favor.
