Provenance

Where it came from

Nephalia Drownyard was originally introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering expansion Innistrad. The card was designed as a rare land representing a bleak, fog-laden coastal region of the gothic-horror themed plane, intended to provide players with a repeatable late-game mana sink that could mill an opponent's deck to death, a mechanic known as control-based milling.

The art for the original release was created by Adam Paquette, who captured the eerie, isolationist atmosphere of Innistrad’s shoreline. This version featured in the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set was a reprint included to support the format's graveyard-focused synergies and provide utility for players in multiplayer games, where its ability to disrupt opponents proved effective in prolonged matches.
