Where it came from
Nephalia Academy was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set within the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, the card depicts the scholarly institution located in the province of Nephalia. Mechanically designed as a land that allows players to draw cards when their spells are countered, it reflects the set’s focus on the psychological and cosmic dread introduced by the transformation of the plane's inhabitants.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Jung Park, who leaned into the gloomy, architectural aesthetic associated with the setting. The design seeks to evoke the intellectual isolation of the academy while adhering to the darker color palette synonymous with the set’s narrative arc regarding the corruption of local knowledge and the influence of the Eldrazi entity Emrakul.
