Netcaster Spider

Netcaster Spider was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set against the backdrop of the plane of Zendikar, the narrative focused on the Gatewatch's efforts to defend the world from the encroaching Eldrazi titans. As a common green creature, the card was designed to provide functional support in the Limited environment, specifically acting as an efficient defensive tool with 'reach' to help ground players interact with the set's prevalent flying threats.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Daarken, known for his dark and visceral fantasy style. He depicted the creature as a jagged, alien-like arachnid, leaning into the set’s theme of corruption and mutation caused by the Eldrazi presence. Mechanically, the design was well-received by the community for its clarity and effectiveness, quickly becoming a staple utility card that demonstrated how simple, well-costed creatures could shape the tactical flow of a draft environment.
