Nether Shadow

Nether Shadow was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering in October 1993. As one of the original black cards in the game's nascent stage, it reflected the thematic preoccupation of early Magic design with graveyard interaction and the macabre. The card was intended to provide a recurring threat for black decks, drawing on the gothic fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's early identity.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, painterly style became a cornerstone of the game's early visual language. Hoover sought to evoke a sense of ethereal, persistent dread fitting for a creature that could return from the grave. While the card is remembered today as a relic of an era where game balance was experimental and aggressive, it was highly regarded during the mid-1990s for its unique mechanical synergy with graveyard-focused strategies.
