Nether Shadow

Nether Shadow originated as a part of the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, but this specific version belongs to the rare 1994 release known as Summer Magic, or Edgar. Produced by Wizards of the Coast as a corrected reprint of the Revised Edition, the set was intended to address widespread printing errors, such as desaturated colors and misprints, found in earlier runs. However, due to a warehouse disaster involving water damage, the vast majority of the Edgar print run was destroyed, leaving only a small quantity to be distributed to retailers and distributors, which transformed these cards into significant historical artifacts for collectors.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, a foundational contributor to the game’s early visual identity. Frazier’s work on Nether Shadow embodies the gothic, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the initial era of the game, utilizing a stark, moody composition to convey the creature's thematic connection to the graveyard. While the gameplay mechanics of the card were considered niche upon its debut, the visual style remains a hallmark of the classic card frame era, representing the raw, experimental design phase of early trading card games.
