Provenance

Where it came from

Nether Spirit was released in the 1999 Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. During this era of the game, the design team was experimenting with graveyard-based mechanics, aiming to provide players with utility that persisted beyond a creature's time on the battlefield. This card was conceived as a recursive threat, intended to challenge opponents by returning to play at the beginning of the controller's upkeep if it was the only creature card in their graveyard.

The artwork was provided by Alan Pollack, whose illustrative style brought a haunting, ethereal quality to the set's more macabre subjects. By focusing on a spectral figure emerging from a desolate, misty landscape, Pollack captured the card's mechanical essence of a restless spirit. Upon release, the card was viewed as a strategic niche piece, praised for its unique graveyard interaction despite being limited by its strict activation requirements.
